Happy Birthday, Stephanie!

We’re celebrating a birthday with Stephanie, one of the Lovebug Creations Creative Team members, today. Here’s a card I made for her using some gorgeous Lovebug Creations products.

ScarletCalliope Stephanie Birthday 2014 1

I used some of the newest Rumple Ribbon to make a pretty bow, this color is Garden Green from the Gardens of Tara collection. Sitting atop the bow is a Beautiful Bloom from the Love in Bloom collection.

ScarletCalliope Stephanie Birthday 2014 2

I also used some White Mama’s Mesh to give a little texture on top of the yellow heart paper.

Stephanie, from the bottom of my creative heart I wish you a wonderful day full of sweet surprises and a year that brings your heart joy and love. Enjoy today and celebrate all month long! And to my visitors, Thank You for stopping by to see my blog post. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Please leave a Happy Birthday message for Stephanie in the comments!

The wait is over, you can finally see all of the Valentine Charms!  And what a collection they are!

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 7How amazing are these charms?  I love all of them and especially because they were made by ladies who are near and dear to my heart and they put so much love into each one that they made.

Here’s the ladies who created this miniature works of art:

1. Michelle Duke
2. Carrie Reid Harney
3. Lonnie Jenck
4. Hope Habbe Ellington
5. Jeanine Stowe Weiss
6. Linda Vinson
7. Nicole Goodwin

Thanks so much ladies for joining the swap and making my Valentine’s Day holiday so pretty!

CB Crest Watermark Jackalope

And, I don’t know if you noticed, but I’ve created a crest for myself to use as the watermark on my pictures. I just couldn’t help but alter the antique crest file that I had from The Graphics Fairy to remove the lion and add a jackalope. He’s part lion and part Jackalope, so I guess he’s a Jackalion.

Thank you, dear, sweet blog readers, for joining me again and for all of your sweet comments. They really make it worth the effort that I put into creating these posts!

Last summer my apricot tree gave me a bumper crop of gorgeous, juicy, fuzzy apricots. There were so many that I didn’t know what to do with them!  So, over the summer I made some into apricot sauce and some were mixed with lemon juice and sugar and put into the freezer for safe keeping. I recently had a desire to make some more jelly (because getting a new freezer that’s smaller than the other one you previously had will do that to you!) and whipped up a mini batch.

ScarletCalliope Pretty Jam Jar 1

Savannah, my sweet daughter, asked if she could take a jar over to her boyfriends family. Well, I couldn’t let that jelly jar leave the house undecorated!  I jumped into action and cut out a circle of fabric, a circle of vellum and got to work decorating.

ScarletCalliope Pretty Jam Jar 2

I used some of the beautiful Simply Sheer ribbon from Lovebug Creations and created a cute double bow. This ribbon is White from the Christmas Candy collection.

ScarletCalliope Pretty Jam Jar 3

I embossed this adorable deer image onto the vellum and I had a cute jar of jelly ready for Savannah to take over! Easy!

Thanks for stopping by!

Living the creative life is an extraordinary experience but sometimes you have to work for it. Luckily for me, I only had to work a little bit (and had a lot of fun), in order to attend the Craft and Hobby Association Winter convention (CHA) this year. CHA is the big show where scrapbook store owners, designers and instructors get to see all of the new craft products from the manufacturers.

Thanks to one of my friends, I was able to work for a while in the Melissa Frances booth and the Petaloo booth. And, I also had time to walk the show floor and take pictures of the new products and say hello to friends.

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 3

Melissa Frances

I started my day in the Melissa Frances booth. I LOVE Melissa Frances products. Her product line includes gorgeous, vintage-inspired papers, trims, sparkling embellishments, miniature cloches and now chalkboard canvases. The time went by so quickly and I wish I’d been able to spend some time getting to know Carolyn Peeler. Luckily for me, Jenny and Aaron of Everyday is a Holiday were in the booth and we got to talk a little bit in between chatting with customers.

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 1 ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 2

I’ve known Jenny and Aaron of “Everyday is a Holiday” since I met them at a creative event in 2011 and they’ve become two of my favorite people. Not only are they super talented, but they’re down to earth and have really big hearts. I’m so happy for them that despite having a tough year they’ve persevered and have created some awesome opportunities for themselves.

Everyday is a Holiday

Recently, they released an amazing book, “Mixed-Media Masterpieces with Jenny & Aaron” which I ran out to buy as soon as it hit the shelves.

Melissa Frances The Sweet Life Melissa Frances The Sweet Life Melissa Frances The Sweet Life

They also designed a line of hand-painted (vs created on a computer) product for Melissa Frances called The Sweet Life. I can’t wait until their scrapbook papers, journaling cards and other coordinating embellishments are in my local scrapbook store!

Are you ready for some Authentique Papers?

After my quick shift in the Melissa Frances booth I had a couple hours to walk around and see the new products from my favorite crafting companies. My first stop was at the Authentique Paper booth and they had some gorgeous papers and projects on display.

Next, I hit up the Sizzix booth.

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 11

Designer Eileen Hull has some wonderful new dies to create Artist Trading Blocks (like Artist Trading Cards, but with more dimension!).

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 12 ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 14

And I always love to see what designer Tim Holtz has been working on. (And I figured out why I can’t find vintage trophy cups in vintage shops anymore!  They’re all in Tim’s displays!)

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 15 ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 16 ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 17

Designer Brenda Walton has added 8 enchanting new dies to her collection, including flowers, leaves, a butterfly gift card, cupcake stands, a heart pendant, and also some textured impression embossing folders. I met Brenda for the first time at the French General Soiree on Sunday evening and she is a lovely, talented artist!

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 13

The latest news in the Sizzix booth is the line of incredible dies from Jo Packham, the editor of “Where Women Create” magazine and an amazing, modern renaissance woman. I had a chance to chat with her about her new line for Sizzix, “Where Women Cook”, on Sunday night at the French General Soiree. I’m excited to see how crafters will use her new dies to create gifts, favors, party supplies, and packaging for their home made baked goods.

Petaloo

Next, I had the opportunity to help CHA attendees create some beautiful Make and Takes in the Petaloo booth. If you haven’t checked out their beautiful blooms in your local scrapbooking store, you must! They have every size, shape and color you could ever want to embellish your projects!  We started off making beautiful bracelets featuring gorgeous Petaloo silk rose petals and blooms and ended the day creating some gorgeous vintage-inspired mini valentines.

ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 4 ScarletCalliope CHA 2014 18

My friend, Julie Weller, worked the shift before me and our friend, Susan Shintaku, happened to visit the booth while we were both there.

Thank you so much for joining me for this field trip. I’ll have more pics to share soon!

Birthday Card: Happy Birthday, Dorcas!

It’s time for another birthday on the Lovebug Creations Creative Team. This time we’re celebrating

Dorcas Troche

and we’re ready to help her get the party started!

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Dorcas 1

The beautiful ribbon on this card is from Lovebug Creations. It’s called Augusta, from the Family Ties Collection. This collection features yards of gorgeous Rumple Ribbon in all of my favorite vintage-inspired colors.

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Dorcas 2

I added a vintage yellow-colored mother-of-pearl button to the center of the super cute bow.

The flowers are fussy-cut, using two different sizes and they’ve been popped out using foam pop dots.

I have a little thing for vellum, so there’s a piece of vellum on here to give a little visual separation between the background and the die cut hexagon shapes.

I outlined each of the hexagon shapes with my white, Signo Uniball pen.

The tag has been stamped with a Happy Birthday Sentiment and dusted with a rust colored embossing powder. A couple sets of gold brown toned crystals gives the tag just a little bit of bling.

The edges of the card and flowers have been lightly rubbed with a brown Copic marker to give the card a bit of a vintage feel.

I’m so excited to tell you that I used a brand new die from Tim Holtz’ Alterations Frameworks line. This Sizzix die is so new, I just brought it home Monday from the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) convention in Anaheim, CA, where I won it and one of my BFF’s stood in line to pick it up for me (Thank you, Julie!  I owe you!)  The name is “Honeycomb” and it’s pretty versatile, allowing you to cut out different sheets of paper from the same collection and then mixing and matching the hexagon shapes.

Happy Birthday, Dorcas!  I wish you a wonderfully creative day and I hope your family spoils you!

Thank you so much for stopping by and please leave a birthday wish for our special Creative Team friend, Dorcas!

Crafting: Glamour in Pink Layout featuring Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon

Hello Friends!

I’ve got some crazy color and patterns going on this week! My inspiration for the colors in this layout came from the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon that the Creative Team received last week. These are brand new colors with a hint of shimmery sparkle and I just love the names: Princess Danika, Lady Jenna and Queen Taylor. You’ll be able to buy them in the shop on Friday!

Since I wanted to do a project with a wild side, I went over to check out what Shimelle has going on. I love her style because she loads up her pages with lots of fun bits and pieces and uses lots of eye-popping color.

Sketch Seven by Shimelle

I used her Sketch to Scrapbook Page layout (Sketch 7) to figure out where everything should go.

Glamour In Pink scrapbook layout by Christine Barker

I’ve had this pink unicorn paper for a while and combined it with some other papers I’ve had in my stash. The key to this layout is lots of layering! Just keep adding, and when you think you’re done, add some more! (Sally Jean Alexander gave me this advice!)

First, I glued the pink unicorn paper, black and white striped paper and the argyle paper to my base paper. Then, I ran a basic stitch in black thread all around the edges. Next, I stamped and heat embossed the HELLO sentiment on black chalkboard paper and used a border punch along the sides.

Next, I attached the picture to the black chalkboard paper with some washi tape.  I layered the black chalkboard paper on top of a pink and white print paper, which was then layered over a black and white petite polka dot paper. I used a lot of foam squares and they’re pretty much under every element on this page. Then, just because there isn’t enough pattern yet, I layered all of that on top of a really graphic black and white paper.

Glamour In Pink scrapbook layout by Christine Barker

I added some white pom poms to the back of the black n white polka dot paper. Next, I used a punch to punch out a 3/4 scalloped circle (using a technique I saw on Pinterest) and layered that on top of a floral paper to create a journaling card.

Once the journaling card was attached, I glued down the picture. Now the fun begins! I’ve had some of these bits and bobs laying around in my stash for at least 10 years. Seriously, there is a pink suede tag next to the journal card and I know I’ve had it forever. It was perfect for this project!

I have to tell you about one of the techniques I used to create the turquoise design that’s peeking out from under the ribbon. The technique is from a tutorial by Jill Cornell on Shimelle’s blog about how to heat emboss on vellum. I’ve been on a vellum kick lately so this tutorial was perfect for me. It’s super easy, but makes a really fun embellishement!

Glamour In Pink scrapbook layout by Christine Barker

I moved and played around with the embellishments until my eyes were crossed and finally got everything put into place. The final touches were to add the white “Perfect Pair” tab to the photo area. Next, I gave the page a generous splash of white paint drips and flings and of course adding the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon was the Pièce de résistance.

Can you see the sparkle in the ribbon? Kimi Cremar, the owner of Lovebug Creations, created this ribbon especially for Jaded Blossom. They are releasing extra special “Fight for a Cure” stamp sets and dies this week and these ribbons are perfect. You’ll want to visit Jaded Blossom on Friday to see the inspiring projects featured in their Release Blog Hop!

Glamour In Pink scrapbook layout by Christine Barker

I’ve got another project that I’ve been working on that I can’t wait to show you!  It’s almost finished and it’s going to feature more of these beautiful pink-hued ribbons. I’m really excited about it. If you listen really closely, you might hear the faint sounds of a calliope playing. I’m crossing my fingers that our weather holds because this super fun project needs to be photographed outside. Send me your sunny thoughts!

Thanks so much for stopping by. I would love to hear your comments, questions and anything else you want to tell me in the Comments section. You don’t know how much it means to me when you take time out of your day to write a note!

xoxo,

Christine
