Today is a very special day for the Lovebug Creations Creative Team.

It’s Dawn Rene’s birthday!

Phenomenal!

To wish her a happy day I created a Circus-Themed birthday card and I’m so excited to share it with you!  First, I have to tell you about the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. I used Simply Blue, from the Star Spangled collection, and William, from my favorite collection, Family Ties.

And, I used some Dark Yellow Mama’s Mesh to give this project a little texture and interest.

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Card Dawn Rene 2

I picked up a Graphic 45 Stack, Le Cirque, from my favorite scrapbooking store, Paper Tales, in San Diego, CA quite a while back and I’ve been hoarding it waiting to use it. Dawn Rene’s card is the perfect reason to break out this paper and start creating. This card took me to Doodle Town!

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Card Dawn Rene 3

There’s so many great vintage circus icons in this paper collection that my mind was on overload trying to narrow down the choices!

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Card Dawn Rene

Happy Birthday, Dawn Rene, and many more!  Please leave a Happy Birthday greeting in the comments for Dawn Rene to read and then visit the Lovebug Creations Blog to see the other amazing cards made for her.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

XO,

Christine Barler

Happy Summer Friends!

School is out for my son and daughter and our summer is just beginning. The weather has been wonderfully mild in Orange County, California and I’m enjoying creating in my craftroom before the weather gets too hot to be upstairs.

Scarlet Calliope Boardwalk b

I’ve got the beach on my mind, so today’s project is inspired by the carefree days of summers spent at the seashore. I used Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon, Graphic 45 “On the Boardwalk” paper, and an assortment of sea shells, trims and embellishments from my stash.

Scarlet Calliope Boardwalk c

I used Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in “Sunset” from the “Island Breeze” collection.

Scarlet Calliope Boardwalk e

I love this paper collection from Graphic 45 with photos of bathing beauties, retro ads and vintage posters.

Scarlet Calliope Boardwalk d

There is glitter galore on this project to make it sparkle like the sea!

Scarlet Calliope Boardwalk f

How amazing is the “Sunset” Rumple Ribbon with this Graphic 45 paper collection?

Thank you so much for visiting.  Have a fantastic week enjoying summer!

Design Team Call: Graphic 45

Did I mention that Graphic 45 is one of my favorite scrapbook paper companies?  You don’t want to miss your chance to join their brilliant and celebrated design team! Not only do you get the opportunity to create some fantastic projects and show off your skills, but you get shipments of amazing new product, not only from Graphic 45 but also from the crafting companies that they partner with!

http://g45papers.typepad.com/graphic45/2013/02/-graphic-45-design-team-call-2013-.html

If you aren’t familiar with the story of how Graphic 45 was started, I’ll share some of the inspiring story with you. Diane Schultz worked as a designer for companies like McCalls, Simplicity, Vogue/Butterick and some other companies. At the age of 45 she went back to school and got her degree in graphic design. As a person who has gone back to school and earned a degree while working full time and raising a family, I applaud Diane for her discipline and hard work. Diane named her company Graphic 45 to celebrate her achievement.

She took a risk and launched her company with the help of her daughter, Aimee, and the rest is scrapbooking history.

I don’t know about you, but I really struggle with knowing when a creative project is done. I’m never happy about things I make until someone tells me they like it and then I puff up with pride and feel I’ve actually created something worthwhile. The creative process is convoluted and tangled. I add a couple finishing touches, take a step back, and sometimes I even take a picture on my phone of the project so that I can see it from a different perspective. And all the while I’m doubting and questioning whether I should just tear it up and start again. Is anyone else like that? Please leave me a comment and tell me I’m not the only weirdo like that…

For this weeks project I wanted to create a mini album that pops off the page. My go-to inspiration for pop-off-the-page POW comes from different sources, like the blogs of Graphic 45, Echo Park, Emma Trout, and Jim Hankins, The Gentleman Crafter.

To give you an idea of where I started, I submit to you Exhibit A, my project that was published in Take Ten, Volume V. Yes, this flatness was actually PUBLISHED in a magazine from Stampington and Company.

Art by Christine Barker published in Take Ten

EXHIBIT A

“Flatness 2005”

I thought I was all crafty and advanced, using paint chips WAY back in 2005, and stamping on them and layering them onto paper and then onto pages out of a book that I had painted with Anna Corba inspired pink stripes. (Ok fine, I’ll come clean, I worked at Stampington & Co for a bit and I think they published this because they felt sorry for me. lol.)

Thankfully one day I read a book, Pretty Little Things: Collage Jewelry, Trinkets and Keepsakes from Sally Jean Alexander, and joined one of her soldering classes, which led to stalking her taking several more of her amazing classes, and I sorta finally learned how to collage, and how to use charcoal pencil to add interest and depth. From there I blossomed, with inspiration learned in classes with Ingrid Dijkers, Lisa Kaus, and a paper flower class with Arlene Baker taken in Kaari Meng’s dreamy French General shop.

Go To Tools for adding depth scarlet calliope

Fast forward to today, and I’d like to introduce you to my tools that come out for almost every project that I work on. I use my brown Copic Marker to edge my paper to give it an antique look. Alternatively you can use a brown ink pad. Foam squares are a must-have to bring elements off the page. (Budget substitute: cut up corrugated cardboard into squares and glue those on instead of foam squares). Dimensional floral embellishments add visual interest and color. Rhinestones are a fancy girls staple. Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon adds a delightful pop of color. Then, there’s my eraser, black charcoal pencil, white charcoal pencil, blender/smudger, and finally my favorite pen, a white Signo Uni-Ball. I am forever grateful to my friend, Michelle Geller, for letting me in on the Signo secret. They are impossible to find and she was so sweet to buy a couple for me from her local Japanese book store and send them to me.

hog heaven christine barker 1

I used the black charcoal pencil to lightly trace around the edges of the papers and then I smudged it with my blending tool. It really makes the letters in “LOVE” stand out. Next, I used the Signo white pen to add dashes around the outside. The white charcoal pencil was used on the scallops to add some depth.

Hog Heaven Mini Album by Christine Barker

I’ve been on a vellum kick lately, so I added a layer of scalloped vellum into the rosette. I used some Golden Interference Gold paint on the paper flowers and the baby mushroom to give them some shimmer. I used some brown flocking powder on Miss Hedgehog, because wouldn’t fuzzy be better than quills? Some pink rhinestones gave her some sparkle and interest. And, of course, I had to add some enchanting Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in “Pink Clouds” to the ring.

hog heaven christine barker 5

On this page I used washi tape to hold the writing paper down and smudged charcoal pencil around all the paper edges.

hog heaven christine barker 6

To make the flower stand out from the paper underneath, I used a triangle shaped makeup sponge to pick up some white ink off of an ink pad, lightly pressed it on the page and then rubbed it with a paper towel to blend it all together. I crumpled up the flowers, like I’ve seen Cheryl Mezzetti do in class, and I added some glitter to the edges because you can never have too much glitter!

hog heaven christine barker 7

I used the same techniques on the rest of the pages, black smudged charcoal around the edges, foam squares to lift the embellishments off the page, and more glitter!

hog heaven christine barker 8

I added some Golden Acrylics Interference Gold to the clouds.

hog heaven christine barker 9

More black charcoal!

hog heaven christine barker 10

On this layout you can see the difference between the white dashes and white charcoal smudges on the scallops on the page on the right and no white details on the page on the left. The white picks it up and adds a touch of whimsy!

I hope you enjoyed learning about my techniques for finishing creative projects. I’d love to hear from you in the comments!

xoxo,

Christine Barker

Field Trip: CHA Winter 2013, Part One

I was really hoping to go to the Craft and Hobby Association 2013 Winter Conference and Trade show (CHA) this year. As a major art and crafting fiend, it’s marvelous to see all of the new products that the craft and hobby manufacturers are creating before they’re available in stores. I wanted to be a part of it so much that I put an offer on my Facebook page that I would be a slave at CHA in exchange for a badge. I was willing to build a booth, promote products, do a demonstration, lead a make and take, whatever it took to get me to Anaheim so that I could be a part of the Craft and Hobby Association Conference and Trade Show.

The last time I went to CHA I did product demonstrations and before that I had experience doing everything from building the booth, meeting manufacturers for advertising in a publication, promoting product and tearing down and packing up the booth. I was really hoping that someone would hit me up and tell me that I was going and I was infinitely disappointed when I didn’t get any bites. Imagine my delight when I saw that Elena Lai Echeverry of Charity Wings posted on her Facebook page Monday morning that she needed a couple of volunteers to help out in the Charity Wings booth and was there anyone available to help? I jumped on it immediately and enthusiastically, like a girl with new glitter kind of excited, and sent her a message. I was so truly happy when she called and asked me to come up and help. You’ve never seen a girl get dressed so fast!

It was so exciting to walk through the hall and see all of the vendors new products on display. I love to see the new scrapbooking papers, stamps, embellishments, as well as new products from the sewing, quilting and embroidery companies. There is really something for every type of artist, crafter, and hobbyist, from scrapbookers to mixed-media artists, and from model builders to fiber artists.

After I got familiarized with the details on Charity Wings I got to share their mission with the CHA attendees. Charity Wings is a non profit organization that hosts and sponsors scrapbooking crops, online raffles, mixed media events and fairy fly by appearances.  From their Facebook Page, “Charity Wings is a 100% volunteer run organization whose mission is to raise money and awareness for noble causes through unique scrapbooking and crafting events and to coordinate and promote “creative” opportunities for crafters to give. We raise money for the worthy causes we support.”  These causes include “A Place to Bark” no kill shelter, Hurricane Sandy Victims, the Be Aware Foundation and many others.

I had so much fun being in the booth!  I got to see people I’ve met through the years, meet the owners of scrapbooking stores, chat with art and craft designers, and giggle with my friends who work in the art and crafting industry. People who came by the booth included Jo Packham, Jenn Mason, Suze Weinberg, Arlene Baker, Laura McCollough, and Kaari Meng. Artist Suzi Blu worked in the booth on Saturday and Sunday painting “Live” and stopped by on Monday to drop off her finished work of mixed-media art.

During my lunch break I ran from booth to booth quickly snapping pics of some of my favorite new products. Among my best loved companies is Graphic 45. I always love their unique and amazing designs! I also stopped by to see Claudine Hellmuth doing a demonstration in the Ranger booth. Another of my favorite lines of products is from Tim Holtz for Ranger, I can’t get enough of the Steampunk/Cabinet of Curiosities theme! One of the highlights was meeting designer Elaine Hull for the first time. We’ve been friends on Facebook for a little bit and it’s always fun to meet people in person after you’ve had a conversation online!

Here are some of the snapshots I took. I’ll be posting more photos that I took on my second day of CHA so come back to check those out. I’m also going to be posting pics and talking about my experience at an event I went to over the weekend. The Art of Craft is held at one of the most special places on earth, French General, in Los Angeles. Kaari Meng is an incredible event organizer and I met some really talented and genuinely nice women. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

In the meantime, enjoy these pics that I took at CHA.
