ScarletCalliope Halloween Treat Jar 1

This week I have an easy Halloween project for you. All you need is a jar, some filler, some of your favorite Halloween-themed paper embellishments and some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Halloween Treat Jar 3

The jar is filled with some cute candy corn filler that I bought at the craft store and decorated with some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbons.

Alternatively, you could add in some real Candy Corn, but make sure that it’s Brach’s or the Candy Corn Snobs are going to get upset!  You think I’m joking, don’t you? Nope, I have a friend whose name begins with M and she is a Candy Corn Snob!

ScarletCalliope Halloween Treat Jar 2

I used some scrapbook paper from the Dollar Spot at Target, layered with a scalloped circle edged with a black stamp pad, another scalloped circle (I do love me some scallops!) and topped with a bat stamp from the dollar section at my local craft store.

Next, I tied on some beautiful Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon and finished it with a Halloween Kitty brad.  Here I’ve used Purple People Eater and some Simply White Rumple Ribbon.

It’s easy to make and super cute to add to your Halloween decorations or to give away to one of your BFF’s!

My sweet friend, Julie Weller, hosted a Sweet and Sinister Swap for us this year and my partner was Michelle Duke, aka The Duchess.

Gypsy fortune teller frame michelle and I

Michelle and I told each other our preferences and then got to work creating Halloween treasures for each other. The swap includes:

  • Something Sweet
  • Something Sinister
  • Something Handmade
  • Something Thrifted
  • Something Home Decor

With our crazy schedules it was difficult to have time to open our presents, since we wanted to FaceTime each other to see the reaction. I opened up my box yesterday and Michelle opened up her box today!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 8

Eek!  Isn’t this an awesome box?  My prezzies are inside here!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 10

I love how Michelle created a handmade card for me, it’s super spooky with the giant spider on it! Check out my haul!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 5

Here’s the scary loot on my mantel. Michelle decorated a photo frame with a gorgeous feather and vintage flower and a vintage picture inside. She also made me a candle, inside the black apothecary style jar, that smells like licorice. These are my Home Decor goodies.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 6

Oh Mummy!  Next is this frightful mummy on a sarcophagus, decorated with a black rose. This is my Something Thrifted, since she found the box at the second hand store. He’s pretty amazing, with his black mesh and all!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 7

Michelle made me a cute pin with black and cream striped ribbon surrounding a cameo of a skeleton lady. This is my Something Handmade and I can’t wait to wear her!  Behind her is a sweet shabby chic style envelope made from burlap and lace. There’s also an amazing glam skull decoration with fab feathers. She’s wearing some black roses and bling and I think this is my favorite, ever!  (I seriously hope my cats don’t notice this or they will be banned from the house!) Inside the sarcophagus were three skulls and those are hanging out on the mantel as well.

Thank you, Michelle, for all of my gorgeous and fun presents! The cats discovered the spider rings and have been flipping them all over the house and I’m enjoying the candy eyeballs!  I love all of my scary, spooky and beautiful treasures that you made and selected for me!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 2

Now, I get to show you what I made for Michelle!  A while back, Julie and I took a trip to Roger’s Gardens to check out their amazing Halloween shop. They really put a lot of work into creating gorgeous Halloween and Christmas displays and this is one tradition I always look forward to. We love Roger and his garden!  🙂

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 14

Anyways, I saw a pumpkin that I loved but didn’t pick it up that day so I made one myself a bit later, using a Papier Mâché pumpkin, painted with acrylic paint mixed with plaster, embellished with black rhinestones. I added the plaster to give it a textured, matte look.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 11

Michelle said she loved Sugar Skulls, so I made her a Dia de los Muertos skull with hand drawn details, Swarovski Crystals, and a marabou feather and crystal tiara. Isn’t it SCARY?

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 12

Next, I made her a wall hanging featuring a vintage little girl in a glittered witches hat decorated with Swarovski Crystals. The wall hanging has a vintage flower topped with a cameo.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 13

For the Something Thrifted I got lucky and scored this gorgeous candle stick. I came across a tutorial online about how to decorate tissue paper and attach it to the candle with a heat gun. But, like everything else, I have to complicate things so I created a design in Photoshop, ran tissue paper through my printer and then attached that to the candle. The candle smells good so that’s the Something Sweet!

I’m so glad we finally opened up our gifts, I’ve been dying to find out what Michelle thought and I couldn’t wait to see what Michelle made me. FaceTime is one of the greatest inventions of all time!

And, I have to give a big THANK YOU to my friend, Pam Munns, for letting me use her incredible art studio to photograph my swap items in. We have such similar tastes in vintage finds that visiting her art studio left me giddy like a kid in a candy store! She has gorgeous vignettes of her vintage and antique finds artfully arranged around her studio and i just wanted to spend days looking through everything.

Thanks for stopping by!

Christine Barker

Swap: Sweet and Sinister

Candle Wrapper 1

Now that my children are older we don’t celebrate Halloween the way we used to. Thankfully my friend, Julie Weller, started hosting a Sweet and Sinister Swap. Our swap has some basic ground rules and some guidelines.  The theme is Vintage Black and White or Cream with a splash of orange, green, purple or red.

For the swap we send our partner:

  • Something Sweet
  • Something Sinister
  • Something Handmade
  • Something Thrifted
  • Something Home Decor

Once partners are assigned we contact each other and say if there’s any particular aspects of Halloween decor that we don’t like. I’m easy, I like it all!  Ok, I don’t like blood and guts, but otherwise I’m good.

Last Halloween my partner was Julie and knowing how much she loves Disneyland I made her a Haunted Mansion Vignette starring Madame Leota for her Something Sinister.

Sweet and Sinister 1

It has an awesome special effect in the roof that flashes lights into the room and makes scary noises. Madame Leota’s glow in the dark head is in a crystal ball and she’s surrounded by floating objects that you would see inside the Haunted Mansion, like a trumpet and a candelabra. The wallpaper is the same as the Haunted Mansion with creepy eyes that glow in the dark.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet and Sinister 2

There’s a bell for ringing, a pile of spooky skulls and one of my favorite details is the picture of the reclining Cat Lady.

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 4

I packed up Julie’s goodies in a box that I decorated with a antique-inspired Mourning Cockade.

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 7

Luckily for me, the avalanche of presents from Julie was amazing!  I love how all of my wrapped prezzies look sitting in my dining room. (Louis, in the back, is totally photo bombing!)

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 8

Julie made an incredibly sinister and spooky crow in a cage. I ADORE this guy and all of the weird creepy crawlies that keep him company in his cage.

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 9

An adorable owl candle and a frightening artists printers tray decorate my mantel. The printers tray has some phenomenal details, like a creepy baby trapped in a spiders web, pumpkins, poison, a rusty key and an odd, ghoulish looking lady stuck in a spider web. I really hit the partner jackpot when Julie assigned herself to me!

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 6

Some licorice in a jar that looks like it’s from an apothecary and a charming skeleton photo holder.

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 10

And, knowing how much I love Hello Kitty, Julie found some Hot Chocolate with Halloween Hello Kitty and a fun vintage printed tea towel.

ScarletCalliope Sweet and Sinister 3

Check out my Sweet and Sinister Swap presents adorning my mantel.

Here are some links to other Sweet & Sinister Swaps, including the one that inspired Julie to launch her own, hosted by ArtsyMama. You can get a great idea of the types of items that are handmade and you can see the love and care that goes into selecting each and every item.

Scarlet Calliope We Been Bood FB 1

I miss the days when my kids were little and I could enjoy the sweet delights of Halloween through their eyes. The first time we got Boo’d I was so surprised, I’d never even heard of it before!  After a stealthy knock at our door, I found a cute ghost picture telling us we’d been Boo’d and we put it up in our window to let everyone know that we’d been hit!  And, we got some yummy treats, too!

Now that my kids are almost 15 and 20 we don’t get to do some of those fun things anymore, like leaving a cute picture and a treat on someones door step, or choosing an adorable halloween costume and passing out candy together. Or carving pumpkins, or decorating the house with their Halloween-themed art projects. Shoot, I think I feel a tear coming.

But I love the BOO tradition so much, I thought it would be fun to do as an adult, too!   I created a couple free printables you can use to BOO your friends and family at their homes or office. And, there’s an image I designed that you can use on social media, like Facebook, or Instagram, or even email or however you want to use it!

Scarlet Calliope We Been Bood Set page 1

This is Page 1 of the Free Printable. Just click on the image and it will appear in a separate tab. You can print it out from there or save to your desktop by dragging it or by right clicking on it and then saving.

This is Page 2 of the Free Printable. Print out both and follow the directions on Page 1.

You can use this saying for Facebook:

You’ve Been Boo’d!
Here’s a sweet ghoul to make you smile, share with a friend you haven’t seen in a while!
Happy Halloween!

I hope you enjoy surprising your friends and family and starting a new Halloween tradition! It’s so much fun to see the signs appearing all over the neighborhood!

Thank you so much for stopping by. If you’d like some cute ideas for handmade Halloween decorations, check out my easy BeWitching Hat Tutorial and my Vintage-Inspired Boo Banner project. I also have a fun and spooky Printable Vintage Halloween Collage available.

Papercrafting: BeWitching Hat Tutorial

05 Thursday Sep 2013

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 14

I’m going to tell you a little secret. Halloween is my favorite Holiday. I know, I know, you’re asking yourself “What about Christmas, and Easter, and geez, why are you slighting Arbor Day?”

Because Halloween rules! What’s not to love about a holiday that’s centered around dressing up like someone else and getting more candy than you know what to do with? It’s my fave and that’s that!

Are you ready for a spooky Witches Hat tutorial featuring Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon? In all of its highly detailed and over-photographed glory, I present to you….a BeWitching Hat Tutorial! You’ll find the hat template available to download and print out down below.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 1

First you’ll cut out your shapes. I’m making 3 hats so I cut out 3 sets of shapes. There’s the cone shape on top, the brim in the middle and plain black paper on the bottom to glue to the brim to give it more stability.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 3

Start off by sticking on some double-sided adhesive tape to your tab on the cone. I use Sookwang 1/4″ Double Sided Tape because all the cool kids are using it and also because it sticks like nobody’s business!

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 4

Then you’re going to peel the paper back off your adhesive tape, roll up your cone and stick it together. Also, glue together the brim to the plain paper and set it aside to dry.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 6

It will make it easier to assemble if you cut a hole in the middle of the brim once it’s dry. If you don’t have a fancy hole making punch like this, just use your scissors and cut out a small 1″ hole in the middle like a big pretty donut!

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 5

For each hat, create a tab with your Double Sided Tape and a strip of paper measuring approximately 2″ long. Cut the strip so that it’s 2 strips that are each 1″ long and fold each of these in half.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 7

Attach the strips to the inside of the cone shape, one on either side.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 8

Then attach the cone shape to the brim using those strips. This is why you want that hole in the middle. Trust me, I tried to do it without the hole the first time and it no workie.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 18

I added some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon to each of my hats for a simple and elegant look. I used Simply Black from the “Just the Basics” collection and some William from the “Oh Cecilia” collection.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 10

But, you know me, I can’t stop there.  It looks elegant with just paper and ribbon, but what if I add some fun, spooky details?

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 13

Like a pretty vintage witch cut out from my collage sheet, edged in silver glitter. And what about some wispy feathers, and a vintage black velvet flower? Next, a pretty bow made from Rumple Ribbon topped off with a vintage mother of pearl button.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 12

On this hat I used a vintage advertisement from my collage sheet, some black tulle, a silk flower and some fun Rumple Ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 11

This hat has some intricate details. Like the worlds smallest paper rosette, with another pretty witch edged in silver glitter, some wispy feathers and more Rumple Ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 15

When I’m on a roll I’m on a roll. I had this dollar store dolly just waiting to be made into a haunted waif. I used some grey chalk under her eyes and around her face to make her look like a lil sorceress and dang if she doesn’t look cute wearing a BeWitching Hat! Silly, I know, but why not?

Scarlet Calliope Witches Hat Template

Here’s the template for the hat.

And, if you’re interested in the Spooky Collage images that I used, you can see them in the Scarlet Calliope Etsy Shop. I am offering an entire set of 19 high res mini Vintage Halloween images for only $2.00!

ScarletCalliope Halloween Vintage Graphic Images low res

Thank you so much for stopping by. I’m excited to let you know that me and the other Lovebug Creations Creative Team members cordially invite you to a Blog Hop starting on Saturday, September 7. You won’t want to miss the “Something Wicked This Way Comes” Blog Hop because we have a spine-chilling line-up of spooky and spectacular projects featuring brand new Halloween-themed colors of Rumple Ribbon for you to create for Halloween.

We’re dying for you to see the new Lovebug Creations products and our chilling projects!
