ScarletCalliope Kimi Birthday 6

Welcome to

KIMI’S SURPRISE BIRTHDAY BLOG HOP!

Have you been seeing the cutest birthday projects ever?  If you arrived at my blog and would like to start at the beginning, which is also the birthday girl’s blog, please hop on over to Lovebug Creations. If you arrived at my blog from Dawn Mercedes, then you’re in the right place!

Here’s my birthday card for Kimi:

ScarletCalliope Kimi Birthday 1

Kimi’s favorite colors are pink and green so I created a card and sweet faux cupcake photo holders using those colors. I hope she likes them!

ScarletCalliope Kimi Birthday 2

My card features several Lovebug Creations products:

Rumple Ribbon in Purpledise

Simply Sheer Ribbon in White

Mama’s Mesh in White

Beautiful Blooms in White

ScarletCalliope Kimi Birthday 3

Doesn’t the Mama’s Mesh look so nice behind all of those crazy colors? The embossed pattern you see on the hot pink is from Tim Holtz.

ScarletCalliope Kimi Birthday 4

I created some faux cupcakes using directions I found online and this was a MESSY project. There was plaster, caulk, and paint everywhere! I had to experiment with the frosting and ended up using caulk mixed with a little bit of plaster and some acrylic paint. The plaster gave the caulk the sturdiness it needed to hold up until it dried.

ScarletCalliope Kimi Birthday 5

These pretty ribbons are Rumple Ribbon from Lovebug Creations in Purpledise. Each cupcake has a different sprinkle. The first one has mica, the second has glass glitter and the third has pink glitter.

Kimi, Happy Birthday to one of my favorite people in the whole world. I wish that Ohio was closer to California so that we could get together and craft and I could give you a Happy Birthday Hug in person!

And to everyone who stopped by, Thank You for hopping!  Please leave a happy comment for Kimi before you go!  Your next destination is over to Kristi to see her pretty project.

xo,

Christine Barker

The wait is over, you can finally see all of the Valentine Charms!  And what a collection they are!

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 7How amazing are these charms?  I love all of them and especially because they were made by ladies who are near and dear to my heart and they put so much love into each one that they made.

Here’s the ladies who created this miniature works of art:

1. Michelle Duke
2. Carrie Reid Harney
3. Lonnie Jenck
4. Hope Habbe Ellington
5. Jeanine Stowe Weiss
6. Linda Vinson
7. Nicole Goodwin
8. Lori Stewart Dams
9. Pam Munns
10. Michelle Hurtt
11. Debbi Udall Wilcock
12. Carol Lucero
13. Ann Hammes
14. Rochelle Kretz Gaukel
15. Julie Gordon Weller
16. Christine Barker

Thanks so much ladies for joining the swap and making my Valentine’s Day holiday so pretty!

CB Crest Watermark Jackalope

And, I don’t know if you noticed, but I’ve created a crest for myself to use as the watermark on my pictures. I just couldn’t help but alter the antique crest file that I had from The Graphics Fairy to remove the lion and add a jackalope. He’s part lion and part Jackalope, so I guess he’s a Jackalion.

Thank you, dear, sweet blog readers, for joining me again and for all of your sweet comments. They really make it worth the effort that I put into creating these posts!

xo,

Christine Barker

Swap: Vintage Inspired Valentine Charms

For the third Valentine swap that I joined, I hosted a charm swap with sixteen participants.

With thoughts of love, friendship, and heart shaped everything in our minds, the girls in my mixed-media swap ended up with a beautiful collection of 16 charms to adorn them or their homes. Since there are so many girls with so many talents in this group I left the materials open to interpretation. The only firm rule is that each charm had to contain metal as a design element, either soldered, or metal bezel, or wire wrapped or something to give a cohesive look with soldered charms.

The main colors were pinks, white, silver, creams, and hints of muted Valentine colors. The size could range from 1″ all the way up to 3″ and this collection gave us all a nice combination of sizes to be used as a garland, charm bracelet, necklace pendants or as ornaments for a Valentine tree.

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 1

Pretty packaging was optional but these girls came through with some gorgeous and daintily wrapped presents!

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 2

I went for a new technique using FIMO polymer clay and I’m so happy with the way they turned out. This was my first time using it this way and I’m going to be using this technique again in the future.

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 3

Creating your own embellishments gives the artist so many different options than just purchasing store bought embellishments!

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 4

Here are all of mine all lined up with different ribbons on them. I just loved looking at all of them together! And don’t they look gorgeous with all of the different colors of Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon?  You can find this beautiful and versatile ribbon in the Lovebug Creations online shop!

ScarletCalliope Valentine Charms 5

Here’s a detail shot so you can see the pretty swans. You probably know by now that swans are my latest infatuation. I found some adorable sterling silver heart head pins and added ballet pink pearls and a pink crystal onto them. I added some glass beads that reminded me of petite chandelier crystals and some tiny pearls.

Participants:

1. Michelle Duke
2. Carrie Reid Harney
3. Lonnie Jenck
4. Hope Habbe Ellington
5. Jeanine Stowe Weiss
6. Linda Vinson
7. Nicole Goodwin
8. Lori Stewart Dams
9. Pam Munns
10. Michelle Hurtt
11. Debbi Udall Wilcock
12. Carol Lucero
13. Ann Hammes
14. Rochelle Kretz Gaukel
15. Julie Gordon Weller
16. Christine Barker

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing all of the Valentine inspiration that I’ve been steeped in. It’s been really wonderful. Tomorrow I’ll show you what all of the charms look like and you can adore them just like I have been!

Christine Barker

Sew Perfect: Valentine Mini Quilt

ScarletCalliope Mini Quilt 1

Cooler weather inspires me to play with my fabric and sewing machine and I just love the chance to use up some of the many fabric scraps in my stash. This project is inspired by a mini quilt I found on Pinterest created by Kristen Robinson.

ScarletCalliope Mini Quilt 3

I created this mini quilt featuring Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in Simply Red and Simply Blue from the Star Spangled Collection. I just love how blue and red look together.  They may not be a traditional duo of Valentine colors but I’m just smitten!

ScarletCalliope Mini Quilt 4

A simple straight stitch with some Simply Red Rumple Ribbon balances out the colors on the corner. Isn’t this girl print the cutest fabric?  It’s designed by Cori Dantini, an artist I met in Minneapolis at The Creative Connection event hosted by Jo Packam in 2010. I added some red embroidery to one of the flowers.

ScarletCalliope Mini Quilt 2

I’m just loving this Rumple Ribbon petite bow tied on the metal key.

ScarletCalliope Mini Quilt 1

I used fabric from different fabric lines here, attached with machine stitching to a muslin background.  The number 14 is done with a simple zig zag stitch with the length at the smallest possible measurement. The heart shape is free motion stitched and the word LOVE is hand embroidered. I added some bits of lace, some vintage mother-of-pearl buttons, and stamped brass charms.

Thanks for stopping by to see my project!  Let me know what you think!

Christine Barker

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. I love the colors of red hearts, with pink accents, and white trim. And, I love the idea of celebrating LOVE!

Graphics Fairy: valentine-clowns-graphicsfairy005b

But most of all, I love candy, especially chocolate. So it’s amazing to me that there is a holiday that brings all of these things together!

Graphics Fairy: Stock-Images-Valentine-Girl-Vintage-GraphicsFairy

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, I created a fun card using Lovebug Creations Rumpled Ribbon.

Scarlet Calliope Valentine Card 2013

Supply List:

  • Lovebug Creations Rumpled Ribbon in Caddy Blue
  • Valentine Scrapbook paper collection
  • Chipboard key shape
  • Paper Doily
  • Turquoise rhinestones
  • Clear glitter
  • Red paint
  • Rhinestone pin
  • Hot glue gun
  • Tacky glue
  • Ranger Glossy Accents
  • Foam Squares
  • Slice shape cutting tool
  • Scissors

Begin this project by creating your embellishments. Start by cutting out a 2.5″ heart out of red patterned paper using a Slice or other die shape cutter.

Scarlet Calliope Valentine 3

Flood the top of the heart with Ranger Glossy Accents to give it a beautiful shine and use a paint brush to spread the glue around before it begins to dry. While the heart is drying, cut out an interesting element from your coordinating scrapbook paper that will be placed in the left hand corner (I used a sweet bird). Add some vintage glitter to really make the embellishment pop. Edge this element with a brown stamp pad or brown marker to give it some definition.

Paint a chipboard key red and set aside to dry. Once dry, add some glitter.

Next, to create a rosette, cut out two strips of the red patterned paper that measure 1″ x 12″. (I attached one strip to the other and ended up using 21″ of it). Also, cut out a 1″ circle of paper using a punch. Using the Martha Stewart Scoring Board, score the strip of paper every 1/2″ and then accordion fold in 1/2″ intervals. Stick the ends together and glue with your hot glue gun. Work the rosette into shape and using a hot glue gun, glue a circle of paper onto the middle of the rosette.

Scarlet Calliope Valentine 2

Using 12″ of Lovebug Creations Rumpled Ribbon, create a loosely gathered bow and tie it down in the middle with 2″ of ribbon. Glue this down on top of the rosette and attach the red Key Chipboard Shape. Attach a rhinestone pin on top of the red key. Set this aside to dry.

Next, cut a piece of scrapbook paper that is 7.5″ tall and 6″ wide. Using a red ink pad, rub the ink pad on the edges to give them a vintage look. Set aside to dry.

I love using Paper Doilies, they remind me of making Valenting crafts in elementary school. Glue a paper doily to the center of the card. Using your red ink pad, edge a piece of 5.5″ x 4″ coordinating paper and attach that on top of the doily using the foam tape. For the center element, a vintage valentine, I used 2 identical pieces of scrapbook paper, but you can also go to The Graphics Fairy and download a free and super cute vintage valentine. Print out two copies onto card stock, and cut the main element out of one of the copies.

Scarlet Calliope Valentine 1

You’ll be layering this cut out copy using foam tape on top of the original copy. Attach these to the 5.5″ x 4″ paper. Add some glitter and some rhinestones to your element.

To finish, attach the handmade and glittered element to the heart shape embellishment using foam tape and attach that to the upper left hand corner with foam tape. Attach the rosette embellishment to the bottom right hand corner with glue. Add some additional rhinestones to the upper right and lower left hand corners of the 5.5″ x 4″ paper.

Scarlet Calliope Valentine Card 2013

Voila! You have a beautiful card or decoration for your home. Enjoy!
