ScarletCalliope Vintage Christmas Ornament Swan 1

This past weekend I went to a very special event hosted by my friend, Kim Caldwell. The event was called Winter Wonderland and was held at the magical Disneyland Hotel. A wonderful part of the creative retreats that I attend is the swaps among the participants. It’s so much fun to create a set of identical ornaments and receive a set back from your friends that are so beautiful and gorgeous, and handmade!

ScarletCalliope Vintage Christmas Ornament Swan 2

There were several swaps for this event but I only joined the vintage Christmas Ornament Swap. Since I have 2 other ornament swaps PLUS a Secret Santa swap going on, I didn’t want to overload myself!

For this swap I created a Victorian-inspired Christmas Ornament, with a swan as the focal point, complete with vintage glass glitter and tinsel around the edges.

ScarletCalliope Vintage Christmas Ornament Swan 3

I created a sweet bow, using Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon, and attached it to the vintage-style bottle brush tree and used Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon as the beautiful hanger, as well. The ribbon I used is Buttercream, from the “I Do” Collection.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Today is a very special day for the Lovebug Creations Creative Team.

It’s Dawn Rene’s birthday!

Phenomenal!

To wish her a happy day I created a Circus-Themed birthday card and I’m so excited to share it with you!  First, I have to tell you about the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. I used Simply Blue, from the Star Spangled collection, and William, from my favorite collection, Family Ties.

And, I used some Dark Yellow Mama’s Mesh to give this project a little texture and interest.

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Card Dawn Rene 2

I picked up a Graphic 45 Stack, Le Cirque, from my favorite scrapbooking store, Paper Tales, in San Diego, CA quite a while back and I’ve been hoarding it waiting to use it. Dawn Rene’s card is the perfect reason to break out this paper and start creating. This card took me to Doodle Town!

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Card Dawn Rene 3

There’s so many great vintage circus icons in this paper collection that my mind was on overload trying to narrow down the choices!

ScarletCalliope Happy Birthday Card Dawn Rene

Happy Birthday, Dawn Rene, and many more!  Please leave a Happy Birthday greeting in the comments for Dawn Rene to read and then visit the Lovebug Creations Blog to see the other amazing cards made for her.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

ScarletCalliope Halloween Treat Jar 1

This week I have an easy Halloween project for you. All you need is a jar, some filler, some of your favorite Halloween-themed paper embellishments and some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Halloween Treat Jar 3

The jar is filled with some cute candy corn filler that I bought at the craft store and decorated with some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbons.

Alternatively, you could add in some real Candy Corn, but make sure that it’s Brach’s or the Candy Corn Snobs are going to get upset!  You think I’m joking, don’t you? Nope, I have a friend whose name begins with M and she is a Candy Corn Snob!

ScarletCalliope Halloween Treat Jar 2

I used some scrapbook paper from the Dollar Spot at Target, layered with a scalloped circle edged with a black stamp pad, another scalloped circle (I do love me some scallops!) and topped with a bat stamp from the dollar section at my local craft store.

Next, I tied on some beautiful Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon and finished it with a Halloween Kitty brad.  Here I’ve used Purple People Eater and some Simply White Rumple Ribbon.

It’s easy to make and super cute to add to your Halloween decorations or to give away to one of your BFF’s!

Paper Crafting: Happy Birthday Card for Zeni!

Birthday Zeni

Hi everyone!

Today is a very special day for the Lovebug Creations Creative Team.

It’s Zeni’s birthday! Write on!

Birthday cake and candle Zeni

To wish her a happy day we created birthday cards for her and I’m so excited to share mine with you!  First, I have to tell you about the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. I used Princess Party Pink and Eyes of Blue.

ScarletCalliope Write On 2

I picked up a DCWV Stack at the craft store a while back and I’ve been waiting to use it. Zeni’s card seemed like the perfect opportunity!  The Stack is called Vintage Collector and I am really fond of it because not only does it have images of vintage typewriters, which I collect (really, what don’t I collect?), but it also has pics of vintage cameras. And bottle caps, and inspirational sayings on chalk board and hot air balloons!  It’s so cute and I adore the colors.

ScarletCalliope Write On 1

I tied the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon into a sweet double bow and surrounded it with some girly accents from my stash. It needed just a little bit of fancy sparkle so I added some pearl-colored sequins. The paper stack came with a nice sentiment coming out of the typewriter but it wasn’t just right so I typed up my own and printed it out on vellum. I know I’m older than some of you but do you remember typing up letters back in the day on a typewriter and using paper so thin it was almost like tissue paper?  I think they did that to save on postage when mailing letters overseas. Anyways, I’m such a stickler for random details so I just had to create what I had in my mind.

ScarletCalliope Write On 3

I’m crazy about how the pink and turquoise ribbon really create a burst of color for this card. I hope Zeni likes it!

Happy Birthday, Zeni, and I hope you celebrate all month long.  Please leave a Happy Birthday greeting for Zeni to read and brighten her day! If you want to see the other amazing cards made for her you can see them on the Lovebug Creations Blog.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

XO,

Christine Barler

Papercrafting: BeWitching Hat Tutorial

05 Thursday Sep 2013

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 14

I’m going to tell you a little secret. Halloween is my favorite Holiday. I know, I know, you’re asking yourself “What about Christmas, and Easter, and geez, why are you slighting Arbor Day?”

Because Halloween rules! What’s not to love about a holiday that’s centered around dressing up like someone else and getting more candy than you know what to do with? It’s my fave and that’s that!

Are you ready for a spooky Witches Hat tutorial featuring Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon? In all of its highly detailed and over-photographed glory, I present to you….a BeWitching Hat Tutorial! You’ll find the hat template available to download and print out down below.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 1

First you’ll cut out your shapes. I’m making 3 hats so I cut out 3 sets of shapes. There’s the cone shape on top, the brim in the middle and plain black paper on the bottom to glue to the brim to give it more stability.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 3

Start off by sticking on some double-sided adhesive tape to your tab on the cone. I use Sookwang 1/4″ Double Sided Tape because all the cool kids are using it and also because it sticks like nobody’s business!

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 4

Then you’re going to peel the paper back off your adhesive tape, roll up your cone and stick it together. Also, glue together the brim to the plain paper and set it aside to dry.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 6

It will make it easier to assemble if you cut a hole in the middle of the brim once it’s dry. If you don’t have a fancy hole making punch like this, just use your scissors and cut out a small 1″ hole in the middle like a big pretty donut!

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 5

For each hat, create a tab with your Double Sided Tape and a strip of paper measuring approximately 2″ long. Cut the strip so that it’s 2 strips that are each 1″ long and fold each of these in half.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 7

Attach the strips to the inside of the cone shape, one on either side.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 8

Then attach the cone shape to the brim using those strips. This is why you want that hole in the middle. Trust me, I tried to do it without the hole the first time and it no workie.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 18

I added some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon to each of my hats for a simple and elegant look. I used Simply Black from the “Just the Basics” collection and some William from the “Oh Cecilia” collection.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 10

But, you know me, I can’t stop there.  It looks elegant with just paper and ribbon, but what if I add some fun, spooky details?

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 13

Like a pretty vintage witch cut out from my collage sheet, edged in silver glitter. And what about some wispy feathers, and a vintage black velvet flower? Next, a pretty bow made from Rumple Ribbon topped off with a vintage mother of pearl button.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 12

On this hat I used a vintage advertisement from my collage sheet, some black tulle, a silk flower and some fun Rumple Ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 11

This hat has some intricate details. Like the worlds smallest paper rosette, with another pretty witch edged in silver glitter, some wispy feathers and more Rumple Ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Witch Hat 15

When I’m on a roll I’m on a roll. I had this dollar store dolly just waiting to be made into a haunted waif. I used some grey chalk under her eyes and around her face to make her look like a lil sorceress and dang if she doesn’t look cute wearing a BeWitching Hat! Silly, I know, but why not?

Scarlet Calliope Witches Hat Template

Here’s the template for the hat.

And, if you’re interested in the Spooky Collage images that I used, you can see them in the Scarlet Calliope Etsy Shop. I am offering an entire set of 19 high res mini Vintage Halloween images for only $2.00!

Tutorial: Pretty Bows with Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon

Scandinavian Inspiration

cb blog aarhus

Den Gamle By
Aarhus, Denmark

Today’s project is inspired by the city of Aarhus, Denmark, where my family and I recently visited while on vacation. Den Gamle By means “Old Town” and a charming Danish town has been recreated in Aarhus (pronounced Oar-Hoos) as it might have been in Hans Christian Andersen’s days, with streets, shops, yards, homes and workshops straight out of the 1800’s. From the windmill to the bakery to the geese swimming in the pond and the bee hives in the garden, inspiration was everywhere and I was entranced.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 7

Now for the tutorial! To create my project, I combined ruffled fabric rosettes with some Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon and a scrap of felt and made some adorable Scandinavian-inspired accessories. (Check out my tutorial to learn how to make a simple rosette)

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 6

To start, I had some whimsical windmill fabric in my stash so I made my favorite quickie project: Ruffled Fabric Rosettes!

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 1

To make the felt bow, cut:

  • (1) piece of felt measuring 1″ x 6″
  • (1) piece of felt measuring 1″ x 4″
  • (1) piece of felt measuring 1/2″ x 2″

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 2

On the 6″ piece of felt, draw a dotted line at the 3″ mark with a fabric marker to indicate the halfway point.

Next, measure out one 6″ length and one 4″ length of Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. For my bows I used Simply Red and William. (Whenever I read that, I read it as Will.I.Am. Anyone else do that?)

Using your hot glue gun, attach the 6″ ribbon down the center of the 6″ piece of felt.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 3

Cut a notch in both ends of the 4″ piece of felt. Glue the 4″ piece of ribbon to the felt now and trim the ends of the ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 4

Take the 6″ piece of felt and bring one end up to meet your dotted line. Attach it using your hot glue gun. Repeat with the other end.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 5

Add a dot of hot glue to the middle, on the seam, and bring up each of the sides to give the bow some shape. Hold it until the glue cools.

Attach the bow to the 4″ piece of felt using hot glue.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 8

Next, wrap the small 1/2″ x 2″ piece of felt around the center of your bow and attach using your hot glue gun. Add a small button or cute detail to the center of your bow.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 9

For a variation, you can cut the 4″ piece of felt in half and glue it to your bow this way.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 10

Attach the bow to a bobby pin and you’ve got a simple but pretty hair accessory.

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 11

I can’t decide which bow style I like best!

ScarletCalliope Windmill Bows 12

Glue the bow to your rosette and attach a pin back and you can have a sweet pin to wear. Or, attach a clip to the back and you can wear it in your hair. Or, attach it to a headband, or a gift bag!  This project gives you lots of versatility!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and please visit Lovebug Creations to see all of the latest colors of Rumple Ribbon and Mama’s Mesh.

And, I’ll let you in on a scary secret!  The Lovebug Creations Creative Team has a blog hop starting on September 7 featuring a new product release that you just don’t want to miss. It will be frighteningly amazing!!! And of course, there will be presents for some lucky winners! Mark your calendar!

Home Decor: Sweet Mason Jar Tutorial

Hello Crafty Friends!

First of all, I have to say a HUGE HELLO, G’Day, Hola, Bonjour, 您好!, and Hallo to my visitors from across the miles. I check my blog stats and I see that I often have some visitors from Australia, the UK, Canada, Argentina, Singapore (Hi Aida!) the Netherlands and France.  Not to mention from all the other corners of the globe and you have no idea how happy that makes me!  Leave a comment and say hello and tell us where you’re from!

globe

So, you may have noticed that Mason Jars are a big deal right now. They’re so popular that Target, Michaels and some other large US retailers are selling the vintage-color blue Ball brand canning jars. I bought a case the other day without any idea what I would do with them, I just knew they needed to come home with me and I’d figure something out. 🙂

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 11

I decorated a mason jar with some fabric, twine, some adorable paper decor and some beautiful Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. This project would make a great gift for a hostess, a thank you or just because! Or, what about using some as centerpieces for a pretty wedding or party? The jars could be filled with sand and votives instead of flowers for a fun seashore themed look!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 1

I started off punching out a 3.5″ scalloped circle from vintage music paper. I also punched out some craft paper and glued it behind the music paper to give it some oomph, I don’t want it folding over once I start adding on some embellishments.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 2

I gave the paper a spritz with some Color Shine in Teal from Heidi Swapp. (I’m so excited that they finally restocked this color at my local crafting shop!)

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 3

Next, I went over the paper with a little bit of gesso mixed with water.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 4

While my scalloped circle was drying I wrapped the jar with a scrap of muslin and used a drop of hot glue to secure it.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 5

Next, it’s time to wrap the jar with twine. Apply a line of hot glue, about an inch, and place the end of the twine in the glue until it cools.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 6

Once the hot glue has cooled completely, begin wrapping the twine around your muslin. I wrapped my jar about 6 times and then used hot glue to secure the end of the twine.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 7

Add a scrap of burlap to your scalloped circle and add a sentiment. I used a sentiment that was on a piece of vellum but you could print out any sentiment on your printer or use a rubber stamp.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 9

Next, I cut an adorable mushroom using my Cricut Cindy Loo cartridge. (I LOVE this cartridge and all of the sweet, whimsical designs!) I used a Copic marker to go around the edges of the mushroom. Then, I added a mini crochet doily and accented it with a vintage mother of pearl button.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 10

Now it’s time for your ribbon!  I used Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in “Mae” to wrap around the jar and to create a sweet bow. I love the “Oh Cecilia” Family Ties collection because it is full of gorgeous, shabby-chic hues that are perfect for my vintage-style crafts!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 8

This vintage style Mason Jar craft goes perfectly with my collection of vintage-style milk jugs!

Thank you so much for joining me. Please leave me a note in the comments and let me know what you’ve been doing with Mason Jars besides canning!

xo,

Christine Barker

And now for my project featuring Lovebug Creations Fun Footz Ribbon.

Scarlet Calliope pinwheel 6

I created some whimsical pinwheels to play with this summer.  How adorable is this ribbon from Lovebug Creations?

Scarlet Calliope Pinwheel macro 2

I love pink and yellow together and love how well this ribbon collection coordinates perfectly with the paper from Heidi Swapp!

Scarlet Calliope pinwheel 5

The paper is Sugar Chic from Heidi Swapp, layered with some paper doilies and cut with my Martha Stewart Scallop Rotary Cutter Blade.

Scarlet Calliope Pinwheel macro 3

I painted three skewers white and then dusted them with some sparkly glitter and added some glitter to accent the pinwheels as well.

Scarlet Calliope pinwheel 8

I’m bow-tying challenged so I watched a tutorial online about how to tie a bow using a special bow maker.

I don’t have a bow maker yet, so I used a fork (I’m versatile like Ariel, the Little Mermaid!) and I’m so happy that I can finally make bows that are even on both sides!

Just in time for Valentine’s day, I made this sweet little Token of Love necklace using the collage I made last week for the background. First I stamped an X and an O onto book paper, cut them out and rubbed the edges with some soft pastels to make them stand out a little. I glued those to the collage and cut out my square. Then, came the fun part…soldering!

After the soldering was done, I added some charms to some chain and attached that to the bottom of the pendant. Next, I mixed and matched some necklaces to make this truly one of a kind. But, the finishing touch was the Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in “Princess Party Pink” that I used to make a cute bow.
