This past weekend I was delighted to be a vendor at the Spring Nesting show at The Vintage Marketplace located at the Oaks Park in Rainbow, CA. I showcased my items together with more than 60 other vendors selling vintage and antique treasures, inspired garden goodies, lace and ruffled items, shabby chic yumminess and the most creative repurposed items.

Infused with the scent of lavender, the theme of my booth was Flora and Fauna, with Flora being on the right side under the white canopy and fauna was on the left side with my vintage 1968 Scotsman trailer, Fiona.

Inspired by Spring, adorable birds, speckled eggs and organic nests I got to work early this year, pinning images to Pinterest and taking notes in my journal. My friend, Julie Weller, and I took a buying trip up to the Bay Area in February and brought back some of the treasures that you’ll see in these photos. I still have some items set aside that will be for sale at a later date and I can’t wait to show those to you!

These are some pictures from the Flora side of my booth. Enjoy!

Swap: Winter Wonderland Ornament Swap

Winter Wonderland Ornament Swap

This year I’m hosting a swap for my friends who love to solder. I’m part of another Christmas swap and it closed before my friend, Pam Munns, could join, so we came up with some ideas for a swap for soldered ornaments with some of our friends we’ve met at the classes we’ve taken with Sally Jean Alexander. I’m so thrilled that not only did our Sally Jean friends join, but a coterie of other talented artists signed up to be in the swap as well!

It’s called Winter Wonderland and the guidelines are to create a soldered Christmas/Holiday ornament that is inspired by the beauty of winter. This leaves plenty of room for each artist to create an ornament inspired by their favorite part of winter and the Christmas holiday. I’m envisioning falling snowflakes, icicles on trees, adorable little woodland creatures hopping through the snow and all kinds of other gorgeous images.

I’m a big fan of vintage and shabby chic so I’m suggesting that all the artists create in a style that is somewhere between Antique Chic to Vintage Grandeur, with Antique Chic possibly being free spirited, lacey, made with linen, a little bit bohemian or a little bit primitive. Vintage Grandeur could be a little bit more dressy than Antique Chic, with chandelier crystals, rhinestones, and maybe a little bit of velvet or silk.

The color palette will consist of white, cream, silver and a hint of a muted winter color.

We have 20 talented ladies participating in this swap and I’ll be dividing us up into 2 groups so that we’ll make 10 ornaments each. The shape of the ornaments is wide open to whatever their hearts desire. There are so many shapes to choose from, like simple squares or circles, to house or dove shapes, vials and small perfume bottles and even stars or three dimensional shadow boxes or reliquaries.

The Ornaments are due to me by December 5 and then I’ll divide them up into the groups and mail them back out to all of the artists.

For inspiration I’ve been doing my research online and finding a lot of gorgeous soldered ornaments on Pinterest. I’ve created a board called Winter Wonderland to give myself some ideas about what shape I want and different colors and sizes.

Since it’s been so warm in Southern California it’s difficult to get in the mood for winter and Christmas so I found a great blog with pictures of beautiful shabby chic decorations to get me going.

Here are some of my artist friends in the Winter Wonderland Ornament Swap who have blogs, teach soldering or sell their soldered jewelry:

Rochelle Gaukel

I’m excited that Rochelle Gaukel, of Whatever Lola Wants Lola Gets, will be joining us. As I was going through Pinterest I saw several of her beautiful pieces pinned to other people’s boards.

Lonnie Jenck

Lonnie Jenck is a sweetheart whom I met at Kim Caldwell’s glorious creative events. Lonnie teaches classes and is a wonderful artist.

Lori Dams

Also joining us is the fabulous Lori Dams, who creates amazing jewelry! If you get to meet her, ask her about Hugh Jackson! And recycling! LOL

Alanna George

Alanna George is an artist I’ve never met in person but I feel lucky that I got to know her through the 12 Days of Christmas Ornament Swap that she hosted. She is a super versatile artist with talents in so many areas!

Hope Ellington

We also have Hope Ellington, an inspirational artist whom I’ve never met but we were in Alanna’s ornament swap together. It’s fun to meet new artists through swaps and get to know them via Facebook.

Christine Barker Scarlet Calliope

And I’ve volunteered to teach my friends, Julie and Jeanine, how to solder. I hope I’m able to give them the instruction and encouragement to create some beautiful ornaments!

I’m counting down the days until I get to see all of these beautiful ornaments start arriving at my house. In the meantime, I’m brainstorming ideas so I can create some delightful ornaments that will grace the trees of my talented friends!

Thank you so much for stopping by!

My sweet friend, Julie Weller, hosted a Sweet and Sinister Swap for us this year and my partner was Michelle Duke, aka The Duchess.

Gypsy fortune teller frame michelle and I

Michelle and I told each other our preferences and then got to work creating Halloween treasures for each other. The swap includes:

  • Something Sweet
  • Something Sinister
  • Something Handmade
  • Something Thrifted
  • Something Home Decor

With our crazy schedules it was difficult to have time to open our presents, since we wanted to FaceTime each other to see the reaction. I opened up my box yesterday and Michelle opened up her box today!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 8

Eek!  Isn’t this an awesome box?  My prezzies are inside here!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 10

I love how Michelle created a handmade card for me, it’s super spooky with the giant spider on it! Check out my haul!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 5

Here’s the scary loot on my mantel. Michelle decorated a photo frame with a gorgeous feather and vintage flower and a vintage picture inside. She also made me a candle, inside the black apothecary style jar, that smells like licorice. These are my Home Decor goodies.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 6

Oh Mummy!  Next is this frightful mummy on a sarcophagus, decorated with a black rose. This is my Something Thrifted, since she found the box at the second hand store. He’s pretty amazing, with his black mesh and all!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 7

Michelle made me a cute pin with black and cream striped ribbon surrounding a cameo of a skeleton lady. This is my Something Handmade and I can’t wait to wear her!  Behind her is a sweet shabby chic style envelope made from burlap and lace. There’s also an amazing glam skull decoration with fab feathers. She’s wearing some black roses and bling and I think this is my favorite, ever!  (I seriously hope my cats don’t notice this or they will be banned from the house!) Inside the sarcophagus were three skulls and those are hanging out on the mantel as well.

Thank you, Michelle, for all of my gorgeous and fun presents! The cats discovered the spider rings and have been flipping them all over the house and I’m enjoying the candy eyeballs!  I love all of my scary, spooky and beautiful treasures that you made and selected for me!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 2

Now, I get to show you what I made for Michelle!  A while back, Julie and I took a trip to Roger’s Gardens to check out their amazing Halloween shop. They really put a lot of work into creating gorgeous Halloween and Christmas displays and this is one tradition I always look forward to. We love Roger and his garden!  🙂

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 14

Anyways, I saw a pumpkin that I loved but didn’t pick it up that day so I made one myself a bit later, using a Papier Mâché pumpkin, painted with acrylic paint mixed with plaster, embellished with black rhinestones. I added the plaster to give it a textured, matte look.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 11

Michelle said she loved Sugar Skulls, so I made her a Dia de los Muertos skull with hand drawn details, Swarovski Crystals, and a marabou feather and crystal tiara. Isn’t it SCARY?

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 12

Next, I made her a wall hanging featuring a vintage little girl in a glittered witches hat decorated with Swarovski Crystals. The wall hanging has a vintage flower topped with a cameo.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet n Sinister 2013 13

For the Something Thrifted I got lucky and scored this gorgeous candle stick. I came across a tutorial online about how to decorate tissue paper and attach it to the candle with a heat gun. But, like everything else, I have to complicate things so I created a design in Photoshop, ran tissue paper through my printer and then attached that to the candle. The candle smells good so that’s the Something Sweet!

I’m so glad we finally opened up our gifts, I’ve been dying to find out what Michelle thought and I couldn’t wait to see what Michelle made me. FaceTime is one of the greatest inventions of all time!

And, I have to give a big THANK YOU to my friend, Pam Munns, for letting me use her incredible art studio to photograph my swap items in. We have such similar tastes in vintage finds that visiting her art studio left me giddy like a kid in a candy store! She has gorgeous vignettes of her vintage and antique finds artfully arranged around her studio and i just wanted to spend days looking through everything.

Thanks for stopping by!

Christine Barker

Home Decor: Sweet Mason Jar Tutorial

Hello Crafty Friends!

First of all, I have to say a HUGE HELLO, G’Day, Hola, Bonjour, 您好!, and Hallo to my visitors from across the miles. I check my blog stats and I see that I often have some visitors from Australia, the UK, Canada, Argentina, Singapore (Hi Aida!) the Netherlands and France.  Not to mention from all the other corners of the globe and you have no idea how happy that makes me!  Leave a comment and say hello and tell us where you’re from!

globe

So, you may have noticed that Mason Jars are a big deal right now. They’re so popular that Target, Michaels and some other large US retailers are selling the vintage-color blue Ball brand canning jars. I bought a case the other day without any idea what I would do with them, I just knew they needed to come home with me and I’d figure something out. 🙂

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 11

I decorated a mason jar with some fabric, twine, some adorable paper decor and some beautiful Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. This project would make a great gift for a hostess, a thank you or just because! Or, what about using some as centerpieces for a pretty wedding or party? The jars could be filled with sand and votives instead of flowers for a fun seashore themed look!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 1

I started off punching out a 3.5″ scalloped circle from vintage music paper. I also punched out some craft paper and glued it behind the music paper to give it some oomph, I don’t want it folding over once I start adding on some embellishments.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 2

I gave the paper a spritz with some Color Shine in Teal from Heidi Swapp. (I’m so excited that they finally restocked this color at my local crafting shop!)

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 3

Next, I went over the paper with a little bit of gesso mixed with water.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 4

While my scalloped circle was drying I wrapped the jar with a scrap of muslin and used a drop of hot glue to secure it.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 5

Next, it’s time to wrap the jar with twine. Apply a line of hot glue, about an inch, and place the end of the twine in the glue until it cools.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 6

Once the hot glue has cooled completely, begin wrapping the twine around your muslin. I wrapped my jar about 6 times and then used hot glue to secure the end of the twine.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 7

Add a scrap of burlap to your scalloped circle and add a sentiment. I used a sentiment that was on a piece of vellum but you could print out any sentiment on your printer or use a rubber stamp.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 9

Next, I cut an adorable mushroom using my Cricut Cindy Loo cartridge. (I LOVE this cartridge and all of the sweet, whimsical designs!) I used a Copic marker to go around the edges of the mushroom. Then, I added a mini crochet doily and accented it with a vintage mother of pearl button.

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 10

Now it’s time for your ribbon!  I used Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in “Mae” to wrap around the jar and to create a sweet bow. I love the “Oh Cecilia” Family Ties collection because it is full of gorgeous, shabby-chic hues that are perfect for my vintage-style crafts!

Scarlet Calliope Sweet 8

This vintage style Mason Jar craft goes perfectly with my collection of vintage-style milk jugs!

Thank you so much for joining me. Please leave me a note in the comments and let me know what you’ve been doing with Mason Jars besides canning!

Ahoy there!

With summer moving forward full steam ahead, it’s important to take the time to buoy our creative spirit. Inspired by a mixed-media sailboat created by Angie Blasingame I found online, I created my own shabby chic version.

Scarlet Calliope Sailboat 2

The bow (front of the boat in sailor speak) of the ship is decorated with a cute bow made from Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon in “Simply White” from the Star Spangled collection. The fore sail is decked out with pretty heart lace trim.

Scarlet Calliope Sailboat 3

I used a vintage spool to support the mast.

Scarlet Calliope Sailboat 4

The stern is decorated with vintage baby mother of pearl buttons and a pretty bow.

Scarlet Calliope Sailboat 5

The hull is made from a recycled USPS chipboard envelope and collaged with book pages and pattern tissue.

Scarlet Calliope Sailboat 6

The aft sail is decorated with white lace and a vintage pearl button is placed at the top of the mast, along with more Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon.

Thank you for stopping by to see my project. Leave me some love in the comments!

xo,

Christine Barker

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Sewing: Prairie Chic Apron Featuring Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon

ScarletCalliope Shabby Chic Apron 1a

Hello Friends!

I’m going back to my shabby chic roots for this weeks project featuring Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. I like to call this look Prairie Chic, since it reminds me of something that Laura might wear if she could choose a pretty apron to wear in her Little House on the Prairie.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Chic Apron 2

I started with a piece of unbleached cotton canvas and ripped off 16″ of fabric. I prefer ripping cotton fabric as opposed to cutting it with scissors because ripping fabric ensures that your seams are completely straight. This apron is about 16 inches high by 20 inches wide. I folded the fabric in half and cut a nice curve at one end.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Chic Apron 3a

I laid out my doilies and stitched them into place. Next, I created the ruffle, (leaving one side with a raw edge), and stitched it along the edge of the apron, right on top. Then, I added a piece of crocheted lace trim on top of the ruffle stitching. Finally, I created a waistband sash and added more crocheted lace trim to keep the look cohesive.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Chic Apron 5a

In 2010 I went to a very special event in Minnesota called The Creative Connection and got to meet one of my favorite artists, Ruth Rae. Ruth signed a copy of her book, Layered, Tattered & Stitched, for me and I’ve treasured it ever since. I’ve been inspired by her work for a long time now, and from time to time I give free motion stitching a whirl. It’s a little difficult to see but the words I stitched are LOVE, CREATE, IMAGINE.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Chic Apron 4a

I created a rosette from some sheer mesh and used Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon to create the center of the flower and added a pretty bow to the sparkling glittered key.

oh_cecilia6

The ribbon that I used is called William. It’s been one of my shabby chic favorites and it’s part of the Oh Cecilia Collection.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Chic Apron 2a

This apron is for sale in my Etsy shop. Please come over and check it out along with my other shabby chic and vintage treasures.

And if you haven’t visited the Lovebug Creations shop lately, you’ll want to check out all of the beautiful colors of ribbon, and now mesh, that they offer. From Shabby Chic to bright and vivid, there are many stunning options for you to choose from. If you’d like to give some Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon as a gift, you can also choose a gift certificate and your gift recipient can select their favorite colors!

Thank you so much for joining me for this project. I hope you have a wonderfully creative week!

Happy Tuesday Creative Friends!

First of all, I have to say that after our exciting wedding blog hop over the weekend I am on a HIGH! I’ve never received so many wonderful words of encouragement! All of that love inspires me and makes me want to keep on creating. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

ScarletCalliope Shabby Bracelet 1

Today I have a shabby chic inspired wrap bracelet that is perfect for using up those scraps of pretty fabric you might have around. I started off by making my flowers using felt for the base and then twisting and turning the ribbon and fabric and hot-gluing it into place. I added a pearl in the center to make it pretty.
ScarletCalliope Shabby Bracelet 2

This stunning Rumple Ribbon is called Oh Darling from the “Dinner Party” collection from Lovebug Creations. For only $6.00 for this collection of 12 yards, this ribbon is not only beautiful but it’s a bargain as well!

ScarletCalliope Shabby Bracelet 3

I used strips of fabric that measured 1″ x 14″ and wrapped them around the leather and tied them in a knot to secure them. You could cover the whole bracelet or leave peeks of leather showing.

ParisFleaMarket-FQB-900

I used this adorable fabric called Paris Flea Market.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Bracelet 6

The leather wrap bracelet is from my friends at Cerdafied Leather.

ScarletCalliope Shabby Bracelet 5

The final step is to glue the flowers onto the fabric wrapped around the bracelet. I used a drop of tacky glue in the middle and hot glue around the outside to give it a super strong bond.  Easy!

If you’d like to purchase one of my bracelets, please visit my Etsy shop!

Now, to reveal the name of the winner of the Ribbon Sliders from Bazzill Basics Paper from the Wedding Blog Hop.  The winner is Kathy, with email bqofss (at) yahoo (dot) com. Kathy, please email me at kryztyne @ Gmail.com to claim your prize!

Have a wonderfully creative week!

Happy Mother’s Day Vintage-Style Home Decor

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 3

Disclaimer: I get a little detailed sometimes! I just love to share!

I went totally vintage on this project and I am in LOVE! I started off by painting a chipboard album page with gesso, then collaging some old book paper on it. Next, I distressed some scrapbook papers with white paint to tone the color down a little and then layered them with foam dots. I cut a photo with my decorative edge scissors, rubbed the edges with a stamp pad and added this on top of the scrapbook papers with foam dots.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 10

I created all kinds of fun embellishments using bits of lace, crocheted doilies, sewing pattern paper and all sorts of vintage and vintage-style pretties. I’m so happy that I finally figured out how to use my paper punch on sewing pattern paper without it ripping. Are you ready for the secret?  Sandwich the pattern paper between two sheets of copy paper and punch away!

The paper rose with the tulle trim is from my friend, Michelle Duke, aka The Duchess, and the lace that I used to create the flower is from crafter extraordinaire, Jennifer Priest.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 9

Of course my project has to have some gorgeous Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon. Don’t you love this vintage color?  It makes my vintage heart go pitter pat!  It’s called George and it’s part of the Oh Cecilia Collection.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 1

And in true Vintage Girl style, I added a gorgeous rhinestone pin that I got in a swag bag from the Enchanted Affaire creative event that I went to last weekend. This rhinestone bling is from Lori Sparkly Franklin of Sparkly Heart Studio.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 7

I added some pretty dew drops from The Robin’s Nest to my paper flower.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 8

And some more dew drops to the side next to the vintage velvet and sequined ribbon.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 6

More dew drops and some vintage colored plastic roses.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 4

And finished off with the word LOVE in glittered chipboard.

ScarletCalliope Moms Day 5

What do you think?  Are you a Vintage Girl at heart like me?

Thank you for stopping by and don’t forget to sign up to follow me and leave a comment so you can win some Blog Candy!

The most recent issue, No 25, of Mollie Makes has an adorable and easy pattern to make plushie bunnies. My poor sewing machine has been sitting on the craft table, lonely and neglected, so I made this cute Easter Bunny and gave my sewing machine some love.

I embroidered her sweet face and gave her a heart shaped nose. Bunny needed a quick and easy basket to sit in, so I stitched one up for her out of felt.

It’s just not Easter without an alluring Easter bonnet, so I used some pretty Rumple Ribbon from Lovebug Creations. This color is called “Oh Darling” and isn’t that the perfect name? It gives my whimsical lil bunny a wisp of shabby chic style. I added a foof of tulle, a rhinestone and a ring of pearls to a paper flower from Prima and she’s all ready for the Easter Parade!

Scarlet Calliope Easter Bunny 5

I adore fuzzy yellow chicks so they had to find a place nuzzled in with my sweet Easter bunny. The eggs in the white basket remind me of one of my favorite candies, Cadbury Mini Eggs. I’ve been able to get through Easter season (so far) without eating more than one lil bag of these delicious chocolates and I’m patting myself on the back for that!

Ribbon:            Lovebug Creations Rumple Ribbon
Floral Fabric:   “Paris Flea Market” by 3 Sisters for Moda
Brown Felt:      JoAnn Fabrics
Paper Flower:  Prima
Yellow Chickies and Basket with eggs:  Michaels

Thank you for joining me here on Scarlet Calliope and please leave some love in the comments!  Come back for my next update to read all about my adventures at Glitterfest. My niece and nephew were visiting from Prescott, AZ, so I’m a little behind in my blogging, but they were soooo worth it!

xo,

Christine Barker
